A NORTHERN suburbs Gypsy Jokers bikie has been charged over the seizure of methamphetamines with a street value of more than $140,000. The 58-year-old from Andrews Farm was arrested by Elizabeth police following a search of business premises in Willochra St at Salisbury Downs that uncovered 280g of the deadly designer drug. Another man, 49, of Morphett Vale, is also facing drug trafficking charges in connection with the significant bust.
They will appear in Elizabeth Magistrates Court in April and May respectively. The arrests were part of a week of action by dozens of police including Crime Gangs Task Force, Organised Crime, suburban CIB and uniform police in response to almost two months of violence between bikie gangs including the Mongols, Hells Angels and elements of the Rebels. The violent incidents have included a home invasion shooting, several drive-by shootings, assaults on individual gang members and firebombings.
The main targets of the police action were members of the Mongols and Hells Angels gangs who have been involved in numerous incidents that have put public safety at risk. Crime Gangs investigations manager detective Chief Inspector Scott Fitzgerald last night said the action had been aimed at preventing future crime like that seen in recent months.
As part of the action, police searched 26 premises in the metropolitan area and several country regions - mainly in the Barossa Valley and Yorke Peninsula. Besides the methamphetamines, cannabis and steroids were also seized during the searches and police assisted the Australian Taxation Office with the service of documents against several individuals.
The searches were enforcing Firearms Prohibition Notices for drugs and illegal firearms and weapons.
“This activity has been primarily about ensuring public safety. It has been organised crime prevention,’’ Chief Insp. Fitzgerald said. “The aim has been to prevent further offences of this nature occurring and risking public safety.’’
He said police would be maintaining pressure on known targets within several gangs and were continuing investigations into the recent violent incidents.
