A stray bullet in a gang-related shooting killed a woman as she drove from church in southern California, police said. Catherine Kennedy, 55, of Escondido, was driving home from church when she was shot at around 9:15 p.m. Tuesday in the 1900 block of E. Grand Ave, according to the Escondido Police Department.
Officers responding to the scene of a car crash determined Kennedy had been driving her silver Toyota Camry when, according to witnesses, at least two possible gang members began shooting at each other in the 1800 block of E. Grand Ave.
Kennedy was struck once in the head by a stray bullet as she drove through the crossfire, causing her to crash into a parked unoccupied car. She was rushed to Palomar Hospital, where she was pronounced dead a short time later, police said.
No arrests have been made as of early Wednesday and investigators are asking anyone with information regarding the shooting to call Escondido police at (760) 839-4926.
Witness Barbara Allen told the San Diego Union-Tribune she heard four gunshots followed by a collision while in her apartment late Tuesday. She went outside and saw Kennedy slouched behind the wheel of her Camry, she said.
“This was an innocent victim driving down the street, we believe coming home from a church function and just happened to be at the wrong place at the wrong time,” Escondido Police Lt. Justin Murphy told NBCSanDiego.com.
